After the terror attack in Nice and in-addition to the terrible cost in human lives, local and national authorities are concerned about the effects of terrorism on tourism. As regards the European countries, it seems that terror has a lower than expected impact on tourism. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), the European travel industry has proven to be very resilient to such dramatic events and is in a position to recover relatively quickly. However, the terrorist attacks on Brussel a few months ago resulted in a decline of about 20% in bookings. And the cost to the Belgian economy was € 4 billion. Paris which suffered similar attacks in November 2015 saw hotel revenues down by 40% in December compared to the same month in 2014. And the luxury shops traffic dropped by 30% during the same period. Moreover, the recurrence of terrorist acts such as the recent tragic attack in Nice could ultimately lead a severe blow to the tourism sector. However, and according to the WTTC report on average it takes approx. 13 months for a place to recover from a terrorist attack, while in comparison it takes 21 months for tourism to recover from diseases and 24 months from an environmental disaster!
