Human activities are responsible for the depletion of the Forests
Deforestation is occurring at an unprecedented rate. And we know that deforestation is the main cause of the extinction of species. Yet, and despite repeated warnings from the great majority of experts many governments are still turning a blind eye to this crucial issue. Each year, between 8 and 13 million hectares of forests are lost, an area equal to 2 or 3 times the size of Switzerland. Other figures are closer to 17 million hectares of forests which would disappear every year worldwide. Intensive agriculture, rapid urbanization and the timber trade are the main factors underlying this disastrous trend. In fact, the tropical forests which represent 1.6 billion hectares are the most affected by deforestation. Alarm bells went off particularly in three different regions of the world: Amazonia in Brazil, Central Africa and South-East Asia especially Indonesia and Malaysia. We should point out that these three areas represent the main tropical forests in the world. It should also be noted that deforestation accounts for nearly 25 % of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. And obviously, it is one of the leading causes of global warming. It is not too late to act.
