Football in India has become a big Business

Indian Football attracts superstars to launch its new Indian Super League (ISL). Among these, Anelka former player for Real Madrid and Chelsea has announced that he had joined Mumbai City. Football is India's second most popular sport, next Cricket. The game of Cricket attracted tons of money which has led to a long series of scandals. This new Football competition should therefore observe strict rules of conduct. Calcutta and Goa are two regions where Football is highly popular. But it will soon affect the whole country. Until now, the financial world and especially private investors were not willing to invest in this sport. The ISL under the leadership of IMG (US), Reliance (India) and Star TV (Murdoch Group) aims to change this by attracting stars which means a much larger audience, more media attention, the arrival of new sponsors and investors, and as a result significant financial returns. Each Club shall be allowed to purchase a foreign star player. The 8 Clubs composing the ISL should spend more than USD 50 Million for this first edition which kicks off in October with a short season ending in December. There is no doubt that a highly colourful show can only be very attractive in a country like India.
