Beware of Unsafe Food
Operation "Opson" coordinated by Interpol-Europol in 47 countries around the world resulted in the seizure of more than 2,500 tonnes of counterfeit foodstuff, drinks and alcohol products. Here are a few unappetizing "pictures". In Italy the police seized 31 tonnes of seafood being sold as fresh but which had been frozen after a significant chemical treatment. Authorities of the same country found a cheese factory producing fake Mozzarella, the product being imported from Eastern-Europe and also undergoing an illicit chemical treatment. Counterfeit alcohol was among the most seized products (275,000 litres); numerous seizures of fake alcohol have been reported in Asian countries but also in the UK. These fake and unsafe food and drinks products pose a real threat to health and the very life of consumers. In fact this illicit trade affects all types of products in most countries throughout the world. And low penalties are not a deterrent given the enormous profits involved.
