Aid to Poorest Countries is Declining
"Alarm bells should be ringing at this shocking drop in aid going to those that need it most" (ONE Organisation). However, and almost paradoxically OECD members overall development aid hit a record US$ 135.2 billion in 2014, but aid to the world's poorest countries dropped 16% to US$ 25 billion-compared to 2013. As a result the share of total development assistance invested in the poorest countries is at its lowest level since 2005. In fact, Britain, Denmark, Luxembourg, Norway and Sweden are the only OECD's members that meet or exceeded the UN target for spending 0.7% of national income on aid. In contrast, France, Italy and Spain appeared to be among the worst performers. Finally, let us recall the long term objective of eradicating extreme poverty in the world by 2030. It is going to be tough but it is mostly a question of political will.
