A Destructive Trend

Our wildlife species are increasingly in danger even throughout the European continent. For brevity, it is useful just to look at the last assessment of the conservation status of around 6000 species that live in Europe. The UICN revealed that up to 25% of those species are now threatened with extinction. Obviously, the overall state of numerous animal species is alarming. It includes mammals, birds and amphibians. More specifically, and according to the UICN red list, 22% of the mammals, 13% of the birds and 27% of the amphibians are threatened with extinction! The majority of scientists agree that this decline is almost exclusively due to human activities and more generally to the demographic explosion which further reduces the natural habitats of many animal species. Furthermore, this major issue not only concerns the animal species but also the plant species: some 23,000 plant species are also at risk. The consensus belief is that to reverse this destructive tendency we should first target the unchecked and chaotic urban development what becomes the norm worldwide.
