Homeless People : another major Crisis is looming

Homeless people are becoming increasingly visible on our streets. Let us recall that 55% of the world's population is already concentrated in urban cities. We also stress that more than 1 billion people now live in the slums of the world's cities and by 2050 the slum population is expected to grow to more than 3 billion (Re:Fig. UN). The shortage of affordable housing, the galloping urbanization, the lack of facilities for people suffering from mental illness or substance abuse, the growing frequency of natural disasters and of course poverty are the main reasons to explain this dramatic issue. Europe also faces growing homeless population. Homelessness is on the rise in all EU countries, except in Finland (Re: FEANTSA). The highest increases in homelessness were recorded in England, Ireland and Belgium. According to the Feantsa study this phenomenon becomes a growing source of concern even in Germany. If we look at Paris (France) 3,000 homeless people are officially reported, but local authorities are obliged to provide hotel rooms to around 10,000 homeless people every night (Re: J.Damon). Central governments have been incapable of resolving the issues related to adequate housing. Regional and local authorities have been unable to treat this crucial problem with the seriousness it deserves. The uncontrolled growth of large towns is a fateful mistake. The long-term cohesion of society is damaged. And yet, it seems that many political leaders have forgotten that housing is a very basic human right.
