A Black Cloud hanging over the Travel and Tourist Industry

This is the problem in a nutshell: 95% of the tourists visit 5% of the planet's surface. As a result, the most attractive cities and sites across the world are close to saturation and some even risk asphyxiation. Tensions are growing with local residents. The authorities in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Paris, London and Bangkok are sounding the alarm. It must be said that until recently, the only objective of many countries was to attract more and more visitors from abroad without giving much consideration to the capacity of tourist sites. As a matter of fact, an increasing number of people, including the Chinese and the Indians, spend their holidays abroad. The traveling population reached a record high of 1.3 billion in 2017 (Fig.UNWTO). In the late 1980s this figure was only 400 million. And the estimate for 2030 is 2 billion! We think at this stage of the old expression: "to have your cake and eat it too". We would obviously like to reduce the pressure of tourism activity on our cities and our environment but at the same time enhance its beneficial impact on our local economies. Indeed, worldwide, these travelers generated almost $1100 billion in revenues in 2016 (Fig.UNWTO). This clearly shows that tourism became a major industry. And in fact it accounts for roughly 10% of world GDP! However, the tourism and travel industry will have to regulate itself quickly. Because mass tourism has already reached an impasse.
