The Main Impacts of Population Aging

Photo par PIXNIO

It has been established that the population is aging in Europe but also in China and Brazil. But it is in Japan that the aging of population is the most advanced. A growing number of elderly people with an increasing life expectancy and a fertility rate of less than two children per woman for several generations are the main explanations for this phenomenon. The countries with the lowest birth rates in Europe are Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal. In Russia it is less the aging of the population that concerns the authorities than its decline. That said, does the aging of the population necessarily imply decline for a country ? This assumption is far from being proved. According to OECD projections Japan will lose 34.6% of its productive forces (20-64 years old) by 2060, Italy 32%, China 26.6%, Germany 20.8% and France 6%. From a strictly demographic point of view it is the case of China which seems the most worrying: the number of people over 65 will double in 25 years from15% to 30% between 2015 and 2040. In conclusion it should be stressed that all over the world many states use the same tools to try to control the impacts of the aging of their population.1. A later retirement age. 2. The use of immigration. 3. Childbirth incentives. These are policies that seem to have proven their effectiveness.
