The party has not yet begun. But what is most surprising is that one of the major sporting events in the world which will take place in Qatar in 2022 may have above all a positive impact on the daily lives of tens of thousands of workers. Indeed, the most important legacy of this Soccer World Cup should be a substantial improvement of workers' rights! It has to be said that until now the rights of foreign workers have never been a priority in this country. And the " Charter of Fundamental Social Rights of Workers " just approved by the Qatar authorities comes in response to the increasing international pressure. However, this Charter, for all its weaknesses, still represents a small progress. This document developed in consultation with the International Labor Organization identified specific measures to improve wages, accomodation, and more generally bring urgent changes in the unacceptable conditions of the migrant workers. The International Trade Union Confederation taking advantage of this opportunity claimed that fatal construction injuries are 8 times higher in Qatar than in other developed nations! And migrants from India and Nepal are the worst affected. But the most important problem has yet to be resolved. It is named " Kafala System ". In brief, this system makes workers completely dependent on their employers if they wish to move to a different job and even more serious if they want to leave the country , the passeports being confiscated. Qatar should spend USD 200 billion for the construction of the necessary sport facilities. But this modern Emirate should also take this opportunity to abolish the most unfair working conditions of its migrant workers. The death since 2012 of more than 450 Indian citizens on work sites is simply intolerable.
