We now live in a Hyper Connected World

Today, more than 4 billion people use the Internet. It means that for the first time, more than half of the world’s population -51.2%- is connected (Re. ITU-UN). The number of mobile telephone subscriptions surpasses the number of the whole world population. And the total installed base of Internet of Things -IoT- connected devices is projected to amount to 75.44 billion worldwide by 2025 (Re.Statista). In light of these figures, the tech sector cannot escape to an environmental assessment of its activities. Even the strongest advocates of an increasingly connected world are aware of its impact on energy use. And indeed around 10% of the world’s total electricity consumption is being used by the Internet (Re.Swedish KTH-2019). Some experts believe that by 2025, and given that always more people and objects will be connected, global communication technologies could be responsible for more carbon emissions than any country except China, India and the USA (Re.Internet Health Report). However, the good news is that the tech sector including the major Internet companies is becoming more energy conscious. Furthermore, it is very likely that the increasing pressure from the public authorities will oblige the entire tech sector to adopt more sustainable practices.
