The political Elite should be exemplary, or at least show the way ahead

One might think that heads of States and Governments have better things to do than to tackle the most important issue facing our planet, that of the threat of climate change. Many observers stressed that the Secretary-General of the United Nations, A. Gutteres, seemed depressed during his inaugural speech at the COP 24 Conference in Poland. It is easy to understand why he was uncomfortable. Concerning the fight against global warming, he said: "We are moving in the wrong direction". Then, of course, he noticed that only 30 heads of states and governments came to attend this very crucial meeting which goal was to implement the 2015 Paris Agreement (COP 21) on climate change. And indeed, it is hard to understand why only 30 of the 197 signatories to the Paris Agreement have been represented by their highest leadership at this opening session. Moreover, no member of the G20 -the 20 leading nations of the world- was present. It is sad. "It is worth repeating once again that we are the first generation to understand climate change and the last generation to be able to do something about it" (P.Taalas S-G World Meteorological Organization). In times of public questioning, stress and concern, governments across the globe must show leadership. Unfortunately, many world leaders and decision-makers remain in a state of denial, and even seem paralyzed by the magnitude of the challenges related to climate change.
