The beginning of a New Year is a good time for reflection

Tackling food insecurity is a prime example of an issue that is difficult to talk about during the festive season. But as 2019 begins, we could have one achievable goal: raise awareness among people of the amount of food wasted in our societies. The number of undernourished people is estimated to have increased to 821 million -around 1 in every 9 people in the world- (Fig.UN-FAO 2018). For the third year in a row, there has been a rise in world hunger. It must be stressed that around a third of the food produced globally is lost or wasted (Fig. Unilever 2018). Food waste happens across the entire agricultural chain. In developing countries, inadequate agricultural techniques, unefficient transportation systems and poor storage infrastructures lead to food waste. In developed countries, the model of production and consumption is in need of reform to sustainably reduce food waste. Just to give 2 striking examples: they concern fishery products and dairy products that are both essential to eradicate hunger from the world. One in three fish caught around the world is thrown back into the ocean because it is of an undesirable size or species, or is rotting before it can be eaten (Report FAO 2018). One in six pints of milk produced around the world is lost or wasted (Re. Edinburgh University-Guardian). In the light of these figures, we cannot sit idle. The time to act is right now !
