It is high time for many governments to face the reality. The security of nuclear power plants is not at an acceptable level and must therefore absolutely be enhanced. Indeed, the terrorist threat is very real and no one can plead ignorance of the situation. The last report of Greenpeace on the safety of nuclear power plants focusses mainly on France but will be of interest to many relevant authorities across the world. The survey's conclusions are clear: these nuclear plants are very vulnerable to outside attacks. It is true, that many other experts have warned our governments about this issue of security, but without success. Greenpeace's study points strongly to the spent fuel storage pools. In France only, there are 62 such pools. In short, the walls of the buildings which house these pools which are filled with spent nuclear fuel are only 30 centimeters thick. Everyone will understand that terrorist groups won't need to use highly sophisticated weapons to inflict serious damage to such facilities resulting in very serious radioactive releases. But there are other reasons for concern such as the use of drones by terrorists. In 2014, French authorities reported that unidentified drones breached the protected airspace of 13 nuclear reactors. Yet, can we really be sure that the detection and early warning systems of our power plants throughout the world have been fundamentally improved since then ? Despite what authorities have said there is room for doubt. Moreover, and in the event of intrusion by undesirable persons or vehicles what would be the reaction time of the security forces ? Now in addition, another major issue is the question of nuclear site hacking. Are we prepared to face such a threat resulting in particular in the disruption of our power supplies ? In any case these major security issues need to be dealt with urgency.
