Global Burden of Disease

The World Health Organization's recent report Global Burden of Disease (GBD) assessment estimates that outdoor air pollution is responsible for 620.000 premature deaths per year in India. Also according to the the WHO and across the G-20 economies, 13 of the 20 most polluted cities are located in India. The GBD analysis provides a comparable assessment of mortality and loss of health due to diseases, injuries and risk factors for all regions of the world. No one would contest that India has made fast progress in addressing its environmental issues. However the country has a long way to go to reach an acceptable environmental quality. India is the world's largest consumer of fuelwood and the urban centres suffer from high levels of traffic related congestion and pollution. According to the Energy and Resources Institute in Delhi the air quality in recent years has declined in the large indian cities. One estimate stressed that the Delhi smog kills more than 10.000 people a year! It is not surprising then that a majority of Indians want to step up action on pollution. Now, there is an urgent need to ensure a balance between economic development and environmental protection. The job will obviously not be easy.
