Europe: a strong smell of secession

EU founding fathers with the crucial aim of stopping the tragic armed conflicts between european nations-more than 60 million deaths including 45 million civilians during the second world war 1939-45-managed the impossible! EU was awarded Nobel Peace Prize. It is only fair. Besides,EU economic success is also undeniable. This area is still the first economic power in the world with a GDP of 17450 billion $. That is 25% of the world's GDP. But the economic downturn revealed that many european were deeply split over the resolution of the crisis. Nobody would minimize the current weakness of the economy or the severe austerity measures which have been taken to reduce the public debts. But it's beyond comparison with war times! It is obvious that most of the european population used to live in great style or at least took things easy. Nowadays unemployment presents a challenge for many people who live on the poverty line, and recession has made them more vulnerable. As a result the crisis caused a rift between rich and poor regions. Extremist parties claim that partition would be the solution to the problem. In fact this proposal is only an easy way out and doesn't achieve anything. Somehow the rise of independence movements in Belgium, Scotland,Italy or Spain will force the european authorities to raise the alarm in order to preserve Europe from regional selfishness and rekindle basics of solidarity between the nations.
