Erdogan's Turkey is moving rapidly away from Europe

Pt Erdogan in a recent message to western countries said that Turkey would soon start looking for new allies. This threat was primarily targeted at the European leaders. In fact, and for years now, the strong man of Turkey has decided to move away his country from western liberal democracies. It is no coincidence that Russia will begin delivering state-of-the-art S 400 surface-to-air missile systems to Turkey in 2019. The major problem is that Turkey is still a significant NATO member. It seems that Pt Erdogan and Pt Putin now share the same objective: weakening the EU that is already subject to internal divisions. The conflict that has ravaged Syria has exacerbated tensions between NATO member states. The Turkish authorities are pursuing obsessively one goal: preventing, whatever the cost, the creation of a Kurdish State. For their part, the western powers at least recognized the importance of the role of Kurdish fighters against ISIS. Moreover, the European Parliament has repeatedly raised its concerns over the deterioration of democracy in Turkey. The failed 2016 coup attempt is used to justify the violation of fundamental freedoms. Ankara regularly rejects EU criticism of its human rights record and Brussels claims, hypocritically, that Turkey's accession to the EU should be encouraged. But the reality today is that European values and Erdogan's Turkey values do not have much in common. The general consensus is clear: the Turkey of Pt Erdogan is not a democracy anymore.
