Taxpayers are giving increased attention to the use of public money. That is why budgets allocated to Royal Courts in Europe are often fiercely debated in National Parliaments. Today, Kings and Princes must provide greater transparncy with regard to their private wealth. Even the British Royal family that enjoys exceptional popularity is accountable to public opinion. There are 14 active Monarchies in Europe. Their allowances come of course from the taxpayers. Here are some figures (annual amounts). The Danish Crown receives an allowance of €9 million. The King of Belgium €11.6 million. The King of Netherlands €39 million. The Queen of England £43.8 million.Yet, in these countries, a majority of citizens express their support for the Monarchies even in economically difficult times. There are at least two reasons for this. First, these Monarchs, especially the Kings of Spain and Belgium but also the Queen of England appear to be key actors for their country's long-term stability. This can be very clearly perceived in Belgium where the government constantly is on the verge of collapse. The same holds true for Spain with the threat of an independent Catalonia. Monarchs can be arbitrators when politicians cannot overcome their divisions. And now the other reason why people respect constitutional Monarchies. As taxpayers, citizens understand that Kings and Queens can boost the local economy. The Royal family brought in £1.8 Billion to the British economy in 2017.The British Monarchy generated £550 million for the tourism industry alone (Report Brand Finance).Today,it is recognized that Monarchies greatly contribute to improve the country's exposure and positive image worldwide. Finally, it is worth pointing out the fact that European Monarchies were wise enough to adapt their images to suit the times and the popular expectations.
