Deforestation is still and more than ever a Major Concern

Let us recall again that forests, after oceans are the largest storehouses of carbon. In a word, they are simply essential to our lives. Deforestation is a clear and major threat to people and nature. An area roughly the size of the State of California was lost to global deforestation during the period 2004-2017 (Re.WWF). Over 43 million hectares of forest have disappeared in 24 regions in the world. Tropical forests are often in bad shape and are particularly threatened. Two-thirds of the world's extirpated forests between 2000 and 2018 are situated in tropical and subtropical areas. Let us stress another striking example: in Australia approximately two-thirds of the original forests vanished. We know perfectly well the main causes of deforestation in the world and yet we do not act with sufficient determination to stop such absurd and often illegal activities. Although it is widely recognized that the main causes of deforestation worldwide are: 1. The livestock industry. 2. The large-scale farming. 3. The large-scale logging. 4. The production of firewood and charcoal. 5. Mining. The fight against deforestation can only be effective if there are major changes in the international trading of raw materials. In any case, it will be a long-term battle which will involve maximum pressure from citizens on their governments. That said, it would be an illusion to think that reforestation would be the miracle solution which will save the future of our planet. Indeed, the fight against climate change will depend first of all on how we are going to change our consumption habits.
