Big Data, Big Concern !

By DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)) [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons

With the massive use of internet and the proliferation of social applications and websites we fuel consciously or unconsciously the mammoth data centers. It is well known that each person who is surfing the web is leaving a digital footprint behind and feeds the big data for the benefit of the Internet giants and other commercial companies. Despite that, the reality is that most all of us do not care because only one thing counts: the immediate satisfaction of our needs. The new consumer has become impatient and seems to be always under time pressure. But tomorrow who will care if privacy is dead because we decided to share almost everything on social media? Certainly not the governments and obviously not the companies which track, collect, and store all aspects of our lives. Of course, there is no denying that the big data can have positive aspects and particularly in the area of medicine and public health. However, here are a few figures which should serve as a guide in our future reflections: 90% of existing data were collected in the past 2 years- Every second 29.000 Gigabyte of informations are published worldwide- some applications on our smartphone will geolocate you up to 10 thousand times a day! This represents a staggering amount of data. And the Internet "never forgets". Big Data must not become a new form of Big Brother. Let us therefore begin a real ethical reflection about the respect of our fundamental rights in the face of an invasive form of technology.
