A few brief Considerations about the current Global Health Crisis

There is growing public and international alarm about the potentially devastating effects of the COVID-19. Unsurprisingly, totalitarian and authoritarian regimes disclose the information in a non transparent way. These regimes do not really care about public opinion. Of course, in the past, we have had other epidemics such as the 2003 outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), another China-born coronavirus. But this time, the COVID-19 outbreak seems to have a serious impact on our everyday lives: confinements of large neighborhoods and towns transformed into huge quarantine centers and massive cancellations of sports and cultural events. Furthermore, the economic impacts of this health crisis are already substantial on the tourism and transport sectors. That said, a majority of health experts agree that China made significant mistakes managing the COVID-19 outbreak. Obviously, the major error was to try to hide the outbreak from the world. Moreover, the Chinese authorities sought to cover up the seriousness of the COVID-19 epidemic. But it is right to point out that some democratic countries, starting with Japan, also have handled this crisis in a fully inappropriate matter. Let us conclude, however, on a hopeful note. Today, we see that there is an increasing cooperation between governments, hospital services and research laboratories across the world to cope with health emergencies. Consequently, we should have the necessary means to address this serious challenge.
